18th Anniversary Of The L.A. Riots: “We Had To Tear This Mutha* Up”
Today marks the 18th anniversary of the LA riots brought on by the acquittal of four LAPD officers who were accused of beating motorist Rodney King. The beating was caught on tape (see below). Fifty-three people died during the 6 day unrest and there was an estimated $1 billion in damage to the city.
Residents in South Central LA faced high unemployment, constant police brutality, and racial tensions in the neighborhood. All these factors were underlying causes and contributed to the rebellion.
And who could forget this song by Ice Cube who chronicled the frustration and rebellion in his song, “We Had To Tear This Mutha&&^*(* up:
