Haute Right Now: “Decoded,” Charlie Wilson, ‘The Wire’ on Netflix, and Groupon

Jay-Z’s Decoded
Call it Mr. Carter’s homage to hip-hop. Though the book has been billed as Jay-Z’s memoir, that description doesn’t really do it justice. It’s filled with images, lyrical analysis and behind-the-scenes moments, recounted with rap fans in mind. So sayeth the L.A. Times: “To Jay-Z’s credit, this hip-hop art book is not just one man’s memoir. It’s also a passionate defense of a musical form that’s often as misunderstood as this complicated spokesman. Just as it’s hit the economic skids, hip-hop has a champion on a rescue mission.”

With all of those letters and numbers in the name, you know this car has to be worthy of attention! We admit, we don’t know what SLS 63 AMG is … but what we do know comes courtesy of the blog, CarScoop: “Exterior appointments on Kicherer’s SLS 63 Supersport are relatively discrete and comprise of carbon fiber front spoiler lip and rear diffuser, stainless steel pipe covers and a set of Kicherer RS-1 multi-part forged wheels. There’s no information about the size of the alloys – though they do appear to be at least 19-inch in diameter. Kicherer only mentions that the rims are “hand-made”. Interior modifications have also been kept to a minimum with a few carbon fiber decorative parts.”

Groupon
Every morning, you can count on two things: The sun will rise, and a Groupon deal will arrive in your e-mail inbox. They’ve got city-specific discounts on everything from rock climbing excursions to 50 percent off retail deals. And signing up is free! Oh, and there’s this: According to the Chicago Tribune, Groupon has decided to reject a buy-out bid from Google … an offer, mind you, which was rumored to be in the $5 billion to $6 billion range.

The Wire on Netflix
It’s been lauded as the best show on television. A cop show like nothing else ever created. And it’s all on DVD. (Nothing new there, of course.) But this winter, with daylight at a premium and temperatures dipping lower and lower, is there any better pastime than watching the full saga from the comfort of your own home? We venture to say not.
