Jackson Painting Removed From Auction
Since Michael Jackson’s death on June 25th, Jackson memorabilia has been in high demand. The latest in this trend is a portrait of the singer recently put up for auction. The oil on silkscreen canvas painting that portrays the singer during his “Thriller” days, was created by pop artist Andy Warhol in 1984 for the cover of Time Magazine.
The current owner bought the painting back in May at a Sotheby’s auction for a reported $278,000. In a move that illustrates the selling power of Jackson related memorabilia, the opening bid for the painting was listed at $800,000 but is expected to sell for between $1 and $10 million. The New York art gallery owner responsible for the paintings most recent auction has temporarily removed the painting from the auction block saying the move was prompted by the overwhelming interest in the portrait.
