The series premiere of Jada Pinkett Smith’s new TNT show, “Hawthorne” pulled in a modest 3.8 million viewers Tuesday night (according to early ratings) making it the most watched show on cable last night during it’s time slot according to ratings. The show features Jada Pinkett Smith in the lead role as the tough as nails nurse Christina Hawthorne of Richmond Trinity Hospital whose rule bending enables her to emerge as the hospital’s resident patient advocate and heroine.
In addition to starring in the series, Smith also serves as Co-Executive Producer of the show along with her husband, Will Smith. As Newsweek’s Allison Samuels points out in a recent Newsweek article, before Jada’s debut last night in “HawthoRNe” and Jill Scott’s leading role in “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency”, an astounding 35 years had passed since a TV drama had an African-American woman in the leading role.
This week, ahead of the show’s Tuesday night series premiere, Jada made the media rounds in New York City, appearing on “The Today Show” and “The View”.
Here’s her segment on “The Today Show”:
Here’s the full clip of her appearance on “The View” where she talks about everything from the new show to the key to her more than 10 year marriage with Will Smith:
