Maia Campbell Now In Treatment
We now have a Maia Campbell update to share with you. Following our reports (read them here) that Maia may have been battling mental illness and substance abuse, we share with you this report from Black Web 2.0:
First of all, thank you for your support and kindness in regard to Maia (My-ee-ah) Campbell. Last night I received a wonderful email from a friend of her late mother, Bebe Moore Campbell. Nancy Carter, executive director of NAMI Urban Los Angeles (NAMI Urban Los Angeles (NULA) is the urban affiliate of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness), thanking BlackWeb20.com for the coverage and the compassion shown towards Maia. Nancy alerted me to my error and explained that Maia has been diagnosed with bi-polar/manic depression. And because substance abuse is involved she has co-occurring disorder, which has symptoms similar to schizophrenia.
In short, Maia is mentally ill and has a substance abuse problem.
Nancy returned my phone call to her and shared some important and good news: Maia is in treatment. And she said that there is hope for Maia’s recovery but the prayers of “50,000,000″ people can make the difference, because Maia doesn’t like to stay in treatment, and her treatment involves drug withdrawal as well as treatment for her disorders.
Nancy was awestruck by the wonderful comments left on our site and by the general outpouring of support. She asked me to tell you that Maia’s disorders are exasperated and sent out of control by substance abuse. Pre-existing and early onset bi-polar, clinical depression and schizophrenia can be sent out of control by marijuana (the worst culprit), alcohol and of course, synthetic and street drugs.
Maintain your hope for Maia’s recovery. Nancy said, “She can use her beauty, talent, and celebrity for the good of others.”

Done…
I am so happy to hear that she is in a treatment facility. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet BeBe Moore Campbell at a book signing and just loved her as an artist. I was a fan of Maia as well from television. I also had a chance to see her live in a play years ago.
If you have never experienced the testamonies of a person struggling with drug addiction, please do not pass judgement. It is more serious than you can imagine. Maia, hang in there and PRAY, girl….
Wow! I had no idea she was even ill. My mother suffers from the EXACT same mental illnesses; bi-polar/manic depression with symtoms of schizophrenia. I pray for her and her family as it’s NOT a pleasant journey. The fact that she is actually IN treatment is huge. Most people that suffer from this don’t admit to having a problem and are capable of appearing normal to an unsuspecting person. Substance abuse along with it is like battling the devil himself. All you can do is pray.
just continue to pray for our dear young brothers and sisters who struggle with these types of sicknessess, maia i will continue to pray for you,and i believe that God allowed you to go through this so that you may see his awesome power and know that Jesus Christ still heals to this very day. Please believe that God will get the glory out of this situation, and even you will be totally amazed at how his love has reached you at a very low point in your life..stay in prayer and stay strong and watch God work…Love you dear sister, and may God’s Peace and his Angels be with you always.
I know apathy and depression go hand in hand, however paradoxical that may appear. I had the thought that I may have adult A.D.D. considering some of the symptoms (lack of focus, no motivation, horrible memory, etc.) and was even treated for it although the medications had no effect whatsoever (minus raising my blood pressure). My Dr.’s opinion is that it therefore could not be A.D.D., and must be something else (e.g. merely symptoms of depression). I have given this a lot of thought.
