Mariah Carey apologized for not delivering a better performance at Michael Jackson’s memorial service on Tuesday where she performed the Jackson 5 hit “I’ll Be There” as a duet along with Trey Lorenz. She told “The Today Show” on Wednesday that she felt as though she “let everybody down” because her voice cracked during her performance as soon as she saw Michael’s casket on stage.

On her Twitter page a day earlier the singer wrote, “Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me. I could barely keep myself from crying. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me.”

She added, “One thing I know is, we will never really have to say goodbye to MJ. His legacy lives on through his music and the millions of people. He inspired with his timeless music. He will be forever in our hearts.”

Her husband, Nick Cannon, spoke to MTV News on Wednesday and said his wife has nothing to apologize for because she had a “human moment” consistent with the emotion that filled the Staples Center memorial. Here’s the MTV News Clip.
