Oprah Says Discovery TV Pushed Her Out Of Broadcast TV
Oprah Winfrey is getting ready to launch her new network, OWN, in January of this year. Her network will replace the Discovery Health Channel.
Now the queen of daytime talk tells Fortune magazine that reaching a final agreement with Discovery was no walk in the park. She shares with the magazine a conversation she had with CEO David Zaslav who told her that for a deal to happen he needed ‘more of her.’
For Zaslav this meant not only did he expect Winfrey to become more involved but he needed her to leave broadcast TV entirely telling her, “If you’re going to be in, you need to be all in.”
“I wasn’t pleased.” Winfrey told Fortune. “I wasn’t pleased at all.”
Ultimately, Winfrey agreed to show her commitment by doubling her on-air presence on OWN to 70 hours per year including hosting ‘Oprah’s Next Chapter’ that will have her traveling around the world interviewing people.
