Last night the Grammy Foundation and Centric partnered up for a Grammy Week event entitled “Word Of Revolution.” The event paid tribute to the evolution of hip hop and featured a cadre of performers ranging from Arrested Development to MC Lyte to Chrisette Michele.
DJ Kid Capri and DJ Skee helped get the crowd off its feet by playing hits that illustrated the evolution of hip hop. DJ Kid Capri kicked it off with some hard core east coast hip hop. For his part, DJ Skee played hit after hit of west coast favorites ranging from Snoop Dogg to Warren G to Dr. Dre.
Later in the program, Marsha Ambrosius contributed her soulful rendition of “Killing Me Softly.” Naughty By Nature encouraged the crowd to chant along with them as they performed Hip Hop Hooray and O.P.P.
Women in hip hop were represented when DJ Beverly Bond got on the ones and twos and led the crowd through a mix of music from women rappers from throughout the years. She played everything from Lil Kim to Queen Latifah to Rah Digga.
Lil Mama performed “Lip Gloss” and at the end of her performance introduced MC Lyte who performed “Cha Cha Cha” and “Ruffneck.”
