According to the Examiner:

Before the 1995 film starring Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon arrived in theaters, author Terry McMillan penned a title of the same name, ‘Waiting To Exhale’. Now, over ten years later, McMillan is revisiting each character in a new novel titled ‘Getting To Happy’.

Slated for release fall 2010, ‘Getting To Happy’ catches up with beloved characters Savannah, Bernadine (Bernie), Gloria, and Robin.

While an official synopsis of the title is not yet available, McMillan confirmed that she will indeed tap into each character in ‘Getting To Happy’ at an event covered by the Bahamas Weekly. She has also confirmed the title on her Twitter page, writing “I’m editing my new novel GETTING TO HAPPY a sequel to WAITING TO EXHALE.”

‘Waiting To Exhale,’ one of McMillan’s New York Times’ Best Sellers, made its debut in 1992. The film followed years later. Directed by Forest Whitaker and released in 1995, it has since pulled in over $81.4 million. It also starred late entertainer Gregory Hines, Dennis Haysbert, Michael Beach, Leon, Wendell Pierce, Donald Faison, Jeffrey D.Sams, and Kenya Moore.

At this point, it is unknown whether the title will be adapted for a film like the original.
