michael_jackson_vma_japao_f_003During Michael Jackson’s memorial today, Brooke Shields mentioned that Michael’s favorite song was “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin.

Michael also covered the song in his 2005 double album, “HIStory: Past, Present, and Future Book I. The original song was featured as the theme (an instrumental) for the soundtrack of the Charlie Chaplin movie, Modern Times, released in 1936.

When Nat King Cole sang the song  in 1954 it became a hit. Other singers ranging from Tony Bennett, Barbara Streisand, Rod Steward to Robert Downey Jr. have also recorded versions of the song.

During concert dates in 1997, Jackson sang the song in tribute to Princess Diana.

Michael Jackson - History: Past, Present and Future, Book 1 - Smile

Here are the lyrics:
Smile
tho’
your heart is aching,
Smile
Even though it’s breaking,
When there are clouds in the sky- You’ll get by,
If you
Smile through your fear and sorrow,
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through- For you.
Light up your face with gladness,
Hide ev’ry trace of sadness,
Altho’ a tear may be ever so near,
That’s the time you must keep on trying,
Smile- What’s the use of crying,
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile,
If you just smile.
