TV Alert: Oprah To Pay Tribute to 200 Freedom Riders
On today’s Oprah Winfrey show, the talk show host is paying tribute to Freedom Riders who opposed racial segregation by featuring more than 178 of them on her show.
This show is especially important to Winfrey who says she owes a “debt of gratitude” to the Freedom Riders who she say transformed her life.
The tribute marks the 50th anniversary of the first Freedom Ride and is expected to be one of the largest gatherings anywhere of Freedom Riders since 1961. Oprah Winfrey is marking the 50th anniversary of the first Freedom Ride and this month’s remarkable PBS documentary about the movement by featuring 178 former Freedom Riders on Wednesday’s broadcast of her talk show.
Other guests on this special episode will include U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia and John Seigenthaler, who was assistant to then-U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Both men were beaten during the civil rights movement.
