(Video) Charles Barkley on Why Athletes Should Get A College Degree
Charles Barkley appeared on David Letterman’s ‘Late Show’ this week and used the time to advocate for college athletes graduating from college.
This topic has been long debated in and outside of the athletic community. How important is it for star athletes to obtain a college degree before heading to the pros?
Barkley himself admitted that he never got his college degree: “I’ve been thinking about going back and getting my degree.”
The former NBA star admits that his current salary is no motivation to do so “…just the truth of the matter is I’m just loaded,” Barkley said laughing. “It won’t help me. See, I want the kids that are not going to be loaded to graduate.”
Barkley stressed that it’s not enough to graduate, you also have to learn in case you don’t make it to the pros: “You just can’t give him classes to keep him eligible,” he said of college athletes. “But you’re talking about young kids who all think they’re going to go to the pros and a very tiny percent — less than 1% — [will].”
